ethnicities
Tay, Thai, Muong, Hoa, Khmer, and Nung are the major ethnic groups of Vietnam with a population of around 1 million each. The minority ethnic groups would be Brau, Roman, Odu with several hundred people each. The official language of Vietnam is Vietnamese; 60% of Vietnam's people are Buddhist, 20% are Catholic, and 20% follow their ancestor's religion. Religion in Vietnam is defined by the mix of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. This is known as Tam Giáo, or “triple religion.”
culture influences
Vietnam was under 1000 years of Chinese rule, so it was
heavily influenced. Politics, Government, Confucian social and moral ethics,
and art became based on Chinese culture.
Then during the French colonial period, Vietnamese culture was again influenced by France.
When France took over Vietnam they induced the spread of Catholicism and the adoption of the Latin alphabet. Before this, Vietnam had used Chinese characters and another alphabet called Chữ nôm which included Chinese characters but also a mix of new characters representing Vietnamese words.
To this day, Vietnam's traditions and festivities are similar to Chinese and French ways. What a unique country, no?
